Domtar is investing $135,000 USD as a funder of First 30x30 Canada, an initiative focused on supporting Indigenous-led conservation projects in Canada. This is an opportunity to contribute to environmental stewardship and economic potential, with Indigenous Nations at the forefront.

A commitment to 30x30 From Domtar and Owner Jackson Wijaya

Through the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, more than 190 countries have committed to protect 30 percent of their lands and waters by 2030, also known as “30x30”. To reach this goal, Canada will need to protect an additional 1.6 million square kilometers (>160 million hectares), an area larger than Saskatchewan and Manitoba combined.

To meet Canada's conservation goals, Indigenous-led conservation is vital.

First 30x30 Canada works to address financial and technical obstacles for Indigenous Nations to maximize economic growth and opportunity through conservation projects. This program helps navigate early-stage project development to launch projects that are built to last.

“We, alongside our owner Jackson Wijaya, have longstanding commitments to sustainability and partnerships that address climate challenges while delivering social benefits, particularly for Indigenous communities,” says Sabrina de Branco, Domtar’s global chief sustainability officer.

 Our funding will contribute to:

  • Identifying opportunities for enhanced biodiversity
  • Prioritizing large areas of land ideal for conservation and absorbing carbon
  • Developing nature-based solutions
  • Delivering economic benefits for Indigenous Nations
