Diversity or multiculturalism Month is observed in April. Its goal is to help cultivate a peaceful society where people of different cultures communicate with one another in a respectful and productive way.
Three quarters of the world’s major conflicts have a cultural dimension. Bridging the gap between cultures is urgent and necessary for peace, stability and development.
In the context of growing globalization, we are all called to exchange with people from different backgrounds, cultures, world views and values. Challenges can arise. Language barriers, stereotypes, social status and trust issues can come into play.
Effective multicultural communications are possible. They require a willingness to understand, respect and value people whose cultures are different from our own. By cultivating our interest and being willing to learn from and engage in dialogue with others, we can foster a sense of interconnectedness and belonging.
Other diversity or multiculturalism events are celebrated on different dates:
In 2002, the UN General Assembly, declared May 21 to be the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.
highlighting not only the richness of the world’s cultures, but also the essential role of intercultural dialogue for achieving peace and sustainable development.
Canadian Multiculturalism Day is celebrated annually on June 27 to honor the many cultural communities that help build a strong and vibrant society.
As an organization, we committed to supporting and maintaining constructive relationships with Indigenous communities in our operating regions. For example, in 2021, Resolute contributed $25,000 to the Lac des Mille Lacs Education Centre, an innovative, multicultural school in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
At Resolute, we all have opportunities to grow and learn. We encourage you to be culturally curious, to seek out opportunities for constructive engagement and to celebrate the cultural diversity that enriches us collectively and reaffirm your commitment to equity, inclusion and mutual respect.
