At Domtar, we are committed to investing locally to support those in the greatest need, and recently, our community investments funded inclusive and accessible activities through the Allegro Foundation and Miracle Park.
Our investments in the Charlotte, North Carolina, region have the ability to benefit more than 1.5 million residents—including the families and friends of our teammates—who live in York County (South Carolina) and Mecklenburg County (North Carolina). We operate three facilities in the area: our U.S. corporate office in Fort Mill, a converting center in Rock Hill and a distribution center in Charlotte.
Allegro Foundation Ambassador’s Ball Supports Children with Special Needs
More than a dozen Domtar teammates and their guests donned their black tie best for the Allegro Foundation’s 15th Annual Ambassador’s Ball. Since 2016, Domtar has participated in this annual Charlotte, North Carolina, event. The ball is key fundraiser for the nationally and internationally recognized organization, which focuses on teaching children with disabilities.
With 100 percent of each ball sponsorship going directly to support Allegro’s programs, Domtar’s 2025 donation will fund 40 peer tutors for an entire year.
“It was an honor attending this year’s ball to see positive impacts of our support of children with special needs, which includes children of some of my own teammates,” says Jordan Bowers, customer relations coordinator with Domtar’s sustainability team.
Allegro has the distinction of being the first organization for children with disabilities to present at The White House. More than 800 children are currently active in Allegro Foundation programs.
“Domtar’s commitment to our organization allows these special students to redefine what is possible and what they can do,” says Mary Berkeley, communications and operations director for the Allegro Foundation.
Funding Inclusive and Accessible Parks and Recreation
Miracle Park in Rock Hill, South Carolina, first opened in September 2021. Domtar was one of the early funders of the park, which caters to citizens of all ages and abilities thanks to inclusive and accessible facilities and events.
A $20,000 donation from Domtar, presented this spring, will help expand the park this year with an additional baseball field and a planned retail space to train, employ and serve people of all abilities.
Ben Jacoby, facilities manager for Domtar’s Fort Mill campus, was one of several Domtar teammates to participate in the check donation presented during a Miracle League game at the park. “It was a special event to take part in,” says Ben. “My heart was touched with this one.”
Miracle Park is the first in the world to hold a Global Universal Design certification recognizing its special design, which is focused on offering inclusive and accessible equipment, sports fields and activities.
This is not the first time Domtar has helped make inclusive and accessible playgrounds possible. We helped fund nearly 4,500-square feet of inclusive and accessible play equipment at Ashdown City Park in Ashdown, Arkansas. These features were added in 2022.
“Our reach goes far beyond our facilities,” says Paige Goff, vice president of sustainability partnerships and engagement. “The foundation of our community investment programs ensure all our neighbors can benefit from our value of caring.”
