Coming Soon: Domtar’s New Sustainability Strategy

Launching Domtar’s Sustainability Strategy

We are closing in on one of the most important milestones to date in the ongoing integration of our three legacy companies: unveiling Domtar’s Sustainability Strategy.

“Each of our legacy companies brought a great deal to the table in terms of sustainability-related mindsets, achievements and best practices,” says Domtar Chief Sustainability Officer Sabrina de Branco. Her team has led the development of Domtar’s Sustainability Strategy in close collaboration with subject matter experts from across Domtar’s business units.

The nearly two-year exercise involved careful assessment of sustainability risks and opportunities that matter most to our company’s resilience and success. It involved extensive outreach to learn the sustainability-related priorities of our employees, customers, operating communities and many other stakeholders, along with the unique perspectives of Indigenous peoples.

“An effective and meaningful sustainability strategy needs to be stakeholder driven,” says de Branco. “We are confident we’ve invested the time and effort in properly understanding where our stakeholders would like to see us focus our efforts within Domtar's Sustainability Strategy while respecting the goals of our ambitious owner, Jackson Wijaya.”

Wijaya is committed to operating Domtar with a commitment to sustainability, innovation and building meaningful partnerships with local communities and stakeholders.

A Closer Look at Domtar’s Sustainability Strategy

Our Sustainability Strategy is built from three strategic pillars: Environmental Stewardship, Our People and Communities and Responsible Business). The pillars reflect external guidance, such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Domtar’s Sustainability Strategy is ambitious, rigorous and transparent—three characteristics de Branco and her team hope will be highly evident for the long term.

  • Domtar’s Sustainability Strategy is ambitious, setting quantifiable targets for the progress of our sustainability objectives for the next five years.
  • The strategy is rigorous, aligning with stakeholder expectations, external best practices and standards.
  • The strategy is transparent. Domtar is making clear public commitments and planning to report regularly on sustainability performance against several key performance indicators.

“This is the trifecta we’ve been keeping in mind throughout all the hard work of building this Strategy, and we’re very excited to be on the cusp of making it public,” says de Branco. “Developing our updated Sustainability Strategy has been a companywide effort, with ongoing contributions and collaboration with subject matter experts spanning functions like environmental management, employee health and safety, corporate governance and more, with full engagement and support from the senior leaders and the Management Board.”

“We hope that many people—inside and outside of Domtar—will see their input reflected in our strategy,” adds de Branco.
