Domtar’s Marlboro Mill recently hosted U.S. Rep. Tom Rice, R-Myrtle Beach, for a visit and tour of the paper mill.
Rice, who represents the Bennettsville-Marlboro County area, also is a co-chair of the bipartisan House and Senate Paper and Packaging Caucus. This group works to inform members of Congress about the value of the paper and packaging industry in their states and districts. The representatives and senators focus on policy solutions needed to sustain and promote our industry.
“It was great to visit the Domtar Marlboro Mill,” Rice says. “I enjoyed touring the facility and talking with employees about ways to improve supply chain and workforce development issues. As chairman of the paper caucus, I appreciate the hundreds of dedicated workers at the mill and look forward to helping support them any way I can in Congress.”
Marlboro Employees Make ‘Cool’ Products
During his visit, Rice met Mill Manager Allan Bohn, who took the reins at Marlboro late last year following the retirement of Dennis Askew. The congressman also spoke with several of the mill’s 330 employees.
Our Marlboro Mill was recognized earlier this year in a statewide manufacturers’ competition to be named the Coolest Thing Made in South Carolina.
The mill produces paper that is used for lottery tickets and receipts. What could be cooler than a prize-winning ticket? Domtar advanced to a top-16 finish, out of 175 entries, on the strength of votes from across the state.
In addition to making cool products, the Marlboro Mill team has been recognized for working safely and has invested in the local community.
Domtar and the mill have contributed to supporting wildlife habitats and assisting in recovery from natural disasters.
“We’re proud of our work at Marlboro, and the people who work here,” Bohn says. “It’s always an honor to have our elected leaders come by to show them how we work and talk about issues that are important to our people and our industry.”
