Supporting Education and Research: 2022 Highlights

Supporting academic institutions is an important component of Resolute’s philanthropic contributions program. Our donations increase access to education in our operating communities, spark innovation in the forest products sector and meaningfully impact the lives of deserving individuals. In 2022, we provided $297,000 in scholarships, bursaries, awards and research grants.

Resolute funded educational opportunities for students at numerous colleges and universities last year, such as Université de Sherbrooke and Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke (Quebec), the University of Ottawa (Ontario) and the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa (Alabama). Our Coosa Pines (Alabama) mill gave bursaries to two university students as part of a scholarship program for Resolute employee dependents. The company presented scholarships to six graduate and eight undergraduate students from Université Laval in Quebec City (Quebec). We have also long sponsored awards at Forces AVENIR, an annual awards program in Quebec recognizing university and high school students who balance academic excellence with a commitment to socially conscious, active and responsible citizenship.

Highlighting the importance of supporting younger students, our Arkansas operations donated $36,000 to two local school boards representing elementary and secondary schools. Other beneficiaries of bursaries and scholarships at the high school level include Atikokan High School in Atikokan (Ontario) and École secondaire La Taïga in Lebel-sur-Quévillon (Quebec).

Providing material resources for schools is another way Resolute supports education. For example, at Confederation College in Thunder Bay (Ontario), we donated $150,000 over five years (2018-2022) toward the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment for the school’s technology, education and collaboration (TEC) Hub. Our Thunder Bay sawmill donated lumber for a carpentry training course offered by Carpenters Union Local 1669 – one of many in-kind donations made by Resolute facilities.

Grants provided by Resolute are advancing research in a range of forestry-related projects, including at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, and at several Quebec institutions such as Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, Université du Québec en Outaouais and Université Laval, where our $175,000 contribution over five years (2021-2025) helped create an educational leadership chair in Indigenous forestry.

Resolute is proud to support the efforts of these worthy institutions. Our ongoing contributions demonstrate our commitment to being a positive force in the communities where we live and work.
