Located in northwestern Saskatchewan, Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp has a longstanding relationship with the community and local First Nations. Commissioned in 1992, Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp’s purchase by Paper Excellence in 2007 marked Paper Excellence’s entry into the Canadian pulp and paper Market. The Meadow Lake Mill is a leading producer of high quality Bleached Chemi Thermal Mechanical Pulp (BCTMP). This pulp is used by customers primarily in Asia to make a wide variety of products from tissue and paper towels to food and board packaging.

Environmental Contributions
  • From 2021 to 2023, reported direct emissions were reduced by 20% from 2021 to 2023 – From 2021 to 2023, reported electricity emissions were reduced by 17% – 2023 was the lowest specific energy (Megawatt-hour per air dry metric ton of pulp produced) year in the mill’s history – Meadow Lake was the first zero effluent bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp (BCTMP) mill in the world and continues to be the only zero effluent BCTMP mill in Canada. MLMP uses a fraction of the freshwater intake compared to a traditional mill.

Community Investment

The Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp Mill supports local causes and groups, including the Meadow Lake Hospital Foundation and their annual Festival of Trees fundraiser. In 2024, the mill provided supports to the local 4-H Club, the Lions Club, senior’s activity centre, as well as cash donations for local scholarships for students in Meadow Lake. The mill has a partnership with NorSask Forest Products through Mistik Management Ltd, which oversees the sustainable management of 1.8 million hectares of boreal forest. MLMP provides supports for Treaty Days and local pow wows.
