Observing the International Day of Persons with Disabilities: December 3

Proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nations, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed every year on December 3. It aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity and well-being of persons with disabilities.

This year’s theme is: “United in action to rescue and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for, with and by persons with disabilities.” In September 2015, the General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that includes 17 SDGs and seeks to be fully inclusive of people with disabilities. Building on the principle of “leaving no one behind”, the new agenda emphasizes a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all.

Today, more than one billion people, or approximately 15% of the world’s population, live with some form of disability. A disability is a condition or function, visible or invisible, judged to be significantly impaired relative to the usual standard of an individual of their group.

Accessibility and inclusion of persons with disabilities are fundamental rights. When barriers to inclusion are removed, persons with disabilities are empowered to participate fully in societal life and their entire community benefits.

We can all support and make a difference by creating a more inclusive work environment. And we can use the hashtag #Envision2030 to join the global conversation and help create a world in 2030 that is fully inclusive of persons with disabilities.
