Managing our Energy and Emissions
Domtar is focused on optimizing the use of carbon-neutral biomass fuels, improving the energy efficiency of our operations, and optimizing our self-generation of electricity.
Today, 72 percent of the energy we use in our mills comes from renewable biomass, mostly generated from our wood processing and pulping byproducts. The industry average is 67%.
Our conversion of aging coal systems to cleaner-burning natural gas has resulted in a variety of measurable clean air benefits, including helping us reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our pulp and paper mills by 15 percent since 2010.
The growing supply of natural gas has helped Domtar accelerate the reduction of coal burning in our power boilers, resulting in significant air emission improvements. Read more about the wide variety of benefits of switching from coal to natural gas for Domtar, our customers, our communities, and the environment in our 2017 Sustainability Report.
