In October 2024, Domtar, Paper Excellence and Resolute Forest Products joined together under the Domtar name. It’s been an exciting and eventful first year as a unified company, and the last 12 months have been defined by Domtar highlights — moments that highlight our commitment to our values — caring, collaboration, accountability and entrepreneurship.
Here are a few Domtar highlights from our first year as a unified forest products company. (Catch up on other Domtar highlights in our recent press release.)
Caring
In the week preceding Earth Day, we announced our community investment framework, Domtar Connects. Through corporate partnerships, local funding and hands-on volunteer work from our employees, Domtar supports the communities where our teams live and work.
One of Domtar Connects’ largest projects is $2K Your Way. This program gives employees a chance to donate $2,000 grants to an organization of their choosing. Over the last year, Domtar awarded more than 100 grants to support a wide range of causes, from early childhood education in Quebec to homeless shelters in South Carolina.
Collaboration
This year, we proudly unveiled our new Sustainability Strategy, built through the collaborative work of internal and external partners. Our Sustainability Strategy is founded upon three main pillars: Environmental Stewardship, Our People and Communities, and Responsible Business. The new strategy outlines 12 objectives for 2026 and 2030, from positively impacting forest biodiversity and reducing water utilization to driving sustainability through product and process innovation and building partnerships with Indigenous communities and businesses.
Another highlight was being named a Sustainable Development Goal leader. This recognition led to Domtar being featured in a short documentary film produced by Acumen Media. Additionally, Domtar was recognized among the Private 25 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World by Corporate Knights, a leading sustainable economy media and research organization.
Collaboration was also at the heart of Domtar’s donation of sustainably harvested lumber building materials for the construction of the TERRE Center in Jonquiere, Quebec. The TERRE Center, once completed, will be a sustainably constructed renewable energy research center in the heart of the Saguenay-Lac St. Jean region of Quebec.
Accountability
In March, Domtar and the Tla’amin Nation signed a historic land agreement. Through the agreement, the Tla’amin Nation reacquired a substantial portion of land at the former tiskwat paper mill site in Powell River, British Columbia. The tiskwat land was a large and important village site that holds great significance for the Tla’amin people.
Entrepreneurship
Most recently, our Kingsport Mill received the Fred Schmitt Award for Outstanding Corporate Leadership from the National Recycling Coalition. This national recognition celebrates the mill’s commitment to making containerboard from 100-percent recycled paper and old corrugated containers.
Domtar was also recognized as an industry leader in energy recovery through our Clermont Mill’s partnership with Hydro-Quebec. This partnership resulted in a 15 million kWh reduction in energy use at the mill.
In our Wood Products business unit, we made progress in applying artificial intelligence modeling to improve product consistency and quality.
In the U.S., we launched Clarion, the first phenol-free thermal receipt paper. This certified-recyclable paper has the same great performance as other point-of-sale thermal papers without using chemical compounds such as BPA and BPS. Clarion is offered through our Domtar POS business.
We can’t wait to see where the future takes us as we continue to grow as a unified company. Stay connected by following us on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram or Youtube.
