Lana Wilhelm receives prestigious Women in Forestry Award of Excellence from Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC)

For Immediate Release:

[Richmond, BC] – Last night, Lana Wilhelm, Director of Indigenous Relations for Paper Excellence Canada, received the prestigious Women in Forestry Award of Excellence from the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC).

“I’m honoured that my work bridging incredibly diverse communities and interests within the forest industry has been recognized in this way,” said Wilhelm. “I wholeheartedly believe that the business of forestry has an important role and responsibility to meet in our nation’s Truth and Reconciliation journey.”

The Women in Forestry Award of Excellence recognizes the contributions and leadership of women in the forest sector. Recipients must demonstrate leadership, innovation, and a commitment to the forest industry. Wilhelm meets these requirements in spades.

“On our team we are proud to have members like Lana Wilhelm, a forester who has spent over 20 years deeply involved in promoting a sustainable and collaborative forest industry that meaningfully includes Indigenous communities,” said Richard Tremblay, President of Pulp and Tissue at Paper Excellence Group of Companies. “Lana launched our Indigenous Relations program and, five years later, she has had a major impact on the way we operate and maintain dialogue with Indigenous communities at all levels of the company in Canada. Throughout her professional career, Lana has focused on the pursuit of collaborative solutions with Indigenous peoples.”

Wilhelm also doesn’t hesitate to act as a guide to the next generation. Within the Canadian Armed Forces’ Canadian Ranger program, she has mentored youth in Junior Ranger summer programs in BC. She also mentors young female Indigenous students and interns through Project Learning Tree Canada’s Green Mentor program and volunteers as a coach for various initiatives such as the Bears Lair Indigenous Youth Entrepreneur Dream Camp.

“I believe in lifting up the next generation so they can bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the forest industry,” said Wilhelm. “It’s important to provide the shoulders for the next generation to stand on.”

A Registered Professional Forester in British Columbia, Wilhelm holds bachelor’s degrees in both Art and Science from Concordia University PQ and the University of Northern British Columbia respectively.

Lana Wilhelm: Leading the Way for Women in Forestry

In an industry where women have historically been underrepresented, women like Lana Wilhelm are creating new paths for the next generation of female leaders in forestry. Now the Director of Indigenous Relations for Paper Excellence Canada, Lana has spent nearly three decades contributing to Canada’s forest industry.

Her deep commitment to Indigenous Relations and dedication to environmental stewardship have earned her the prestigious Women in Forestry Award of Excellence from the Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC).

A Passion for Forestry Rooted in Stewardship

Lana’s love for forestry began in the early days of her career, during her time tree planting in remote regions of western Canada. This hands-on experience sparked a lifelong dedication to environmental sustainability. However, it was her time spent working in soils and ecology research and land use planning on Haida Gwaii, that solidified her passion. It was there that she first encountered the deep cultural values of coastal First Nations, which would go on to shape her career.

Lana reflects on those early days, saying, “Learning from coastal First Nations cultural values on the ground fired me up with this vision of how I wanted to be a part of a forest industry that worked together.” Her journey into Indigenous relations within the forest industry became a personal mission to weave together the worlds of Indigenous knowledge and western science – a vision she has carried forward throughout her career.

Making an Impact in Forestry and Indigenous Relations

Over the last five years, Lana has been a leader in building an entire “soup to nuts” Indigenous Relations program at Paper Excellence Canada. As more women in forestry assume leadership roles, they are driving meaningful change by fostering collaboration between industry and Indigenous communities. Under Lana’s leadership, Paper Excellence comprehensive Indigenous Relations program focuses on long-term partnerships.

Lana believes this work goes beyond mere compliance. “Companies can leverage the deep knowledge and unique skill sets Indigenous people bring to the table in sophisticated partnerships,” she explains. “Recognizing that value and having it lead to long-term sustainable employment and procurement policies that drive change is key to any Indigenous Relations program and that’s valuable to me and to our sector as a whole.” Lana’s story exemplifies how women in forestry are making a significant impact by incorporating diverse perspectives into sustainable forestry practices.

Recognition of Women in Forestry Leadership

Lana’s contributions to the forestry industry have not gone unnoticed. The prestigious Women in Forestry Award of Excellence from FPAC recognizes Lana’s leadership in both Indigenous Relations and sustainable forestry. This prestigious award celebrates the growing influence of women in forestry and their ability to shape the future of the industry.

“The significance of being recognized by your mentors and peers within the forest industry genuinely hits home with me,” says Lana. “To be recognized by this group is powerful and impactful.” Her recognition highlights the importance of women in forestry leadership, not just for Paper Excellence but for the entire industry.

Encouraging Women to Pursue Careers in Forestry

Lana Wilhelm’s career offers a compelling message to women considering a future in forestry leadership. The forestry industry, particularly in Indigenous Relations, provides dynamic opportunities for growth, innovation, and leadership. Lana’s journey – from tree planter to Director of Indigenous Relations – illustrates how diverse and rewarding a career in forestry can be.

“There’s enormous opportunity to challenge the policy of what good forestry is through both a social and environmental lens,” Lana says. “And within the industry, there’s a real capacity and willingness to keep learning and growing.”

Lana believes that women in forestry have the potential to shape the industry by incorporating a broader perspective – one that balances sustainable forestry with social responsibility. Through roles in forest planning, environmental stewardship, and Indigenous Relations, women are uniquely positioned to drive change in forestry leadership. “It’s a career that can really take you in diverse directions and that’s exciting. You’re truly only limited by your imagination in your forestry career.”

PROGRESS 2024: Paper Excellence is building a cleaner future in Port Alberni

Excerpt from the article:

Paper Excellence in Port Alberni has been awarded a pair of CleanBC Industry Fund grants totalling $145,000 for feasibility studies examining two sustainable business projects.

The first grant, for $51,000, will help Port Alberni’s Catalyst Paper division look at offloading and delivery options for its biofuel. This would include improving efficiency in offloading of hogfuel at the plant as well as ways to increase biofuel steam production to reduce natural gas consumption in its No. 4 power boiler and auxiliary boilers.

The second grant, for approximately $94,000, will help Catalyst Paper investigate the feasibility of power boiler stack heat recovery. This project would ideally see the paper plant install a heat-recovery system in the power boiler exhaust. Recovered heat would in turn offset the heat generated from fuel combustion.

“Both of our projects are designed to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels,” said Keith Ellwood, interim manager at Paper Excellence’s Catalyst Paper plant in Port Alberni. The studies will also hopefully find a way for the company to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, he added. And if the studies pan out, the processes could be used across Paper Excellence’s other plants.

Paper Excellence Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia Reach a Settlement

For Immediate Release:

[Halifax, NS]—Paper Excellence Canada announced today that it has reached a settlement with the Province of Nova Scotia that acknowledges plans to transform and reopen Northern Pulp Nova Scotia in Pictou will not proceed and provides for a review process agreed between the Northern Pulp group and the Province of Nova Scotia that is aimed to determine whether a new, modern mill in Nova Scotia is viable. The agreement also provides for the settlement of outstanding litigation and loans between the two parties and fully addresses the pensions of former mill employees.

The settlement agreement is subject to approval by the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

Feasibility study for a new, modern mill
Central to the settlement agreement is the creation by the Northern Pulp group (a subsidiary of the Paper Excellence group) and the Province of Nova Scotia of a review process that will explore the feasibility of a new, modern mill in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Paper Excellence Canada will fund this review process and will work in close consultation with the Province of Nova Scotia in undertaking a feasibility study to determine whether a viable business case exists to open a new mill there.

The potential construction of a state-of-the-art Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft (NBSK) pulp mill therefore depends on a determination of viability under this study.

If a new mill is viable, the Northern Pulp group will seek third-party project financing to design, construct, and operate it. Northern Pulp will also pay the province $15M to fully resolve previous woodlands-related debt and will continue to own the woodlands.

If a new mill is not feasible, the Northern Pulp group’s assets in Nova Scotia will be sold in a managed process. The proceeds from the sale will be used to repay the debtor-in-possession financing incurred throughout Northern Pulp’s CCAA process, fund and wind-up pension plans and contribute to cleanup costs. Any funds remaining will go to the province to repay the debts owed to it.

Pictou site to be maintained for potential logistics operations
Paper Excellence’s plans to transform and reopen Northern Pulp Nova Scotia will not proceed. Instead, the focus will shift to maintaining the site for potential future woodland logistics operations, conditional upon establishing a new mill elsewhere in Nova Scotia.

The Pictou site will remain in cold hibernation during the feasibility study. Northern Pulp Nova Scotia will continue to comply with its obligations under the existing ministerial order, environmental laws, and regulations and provide ongoing care and maintenance of the site.

Northern Pulp Nova Scotia will remain in CCAA for as long as necessary to achieve the settlement’s objectives.

Former employee pensions to be fully funded
Regardless of the feasibility study results, outstanding pensions of current and former Northern Pulp Nova Scotia employees will be fully funded, and pension obligations will be fully discharged. Northern Pulp employees and retirees have been the heart of the mill since it opened, and this agreement ensures their pensions are funded, and the plans are wound up.

Withdrawal of litigation and settlement of debts
To resolve all outstanding legal claims, Paper Excellence will withdraw its lawsuit against the province and settle debts under the terms of the settlement agreement. This resolution clears the path for a collaborative future between Paper Excellence and the Province of Nova Scotia.

Building relationships and supporting Nova Scotia’s forestry sector
While the redevelopment of the Pictou mill will not proceed, Paper Excellence remains committed to supporting Nova Scotia’s forestry sector and exploring new opportunities for economic development.

Paper Excellence knows there are historical community and First Nations concerns related to the Pictou mill’s operations. The company values its relationships with community members, First Nations, and stakeholders. Through transparency, dialogue, and collaboration, Paper Excellence aims to build trust and foster a positive impact on the communities it serves.

The request for approval of the settlement agreement will be heard in the British Columbia Supreme Court on May 31, 2024. Documents related to the agreement were filed on May 22, 2024 and are available here.

Atli Chip LP celebrates an important milestone in sustainable forestry practices

Below is a quote from our Chief Forester, Quinton Hayward, followed by a recent article published by the Forest Enhancement Society of BC celebrating an important sustainable forestry practices milestone achieved by Atli Resources LP. You can also find the article on FESBC’s website: ‘Namgis Chief Victor Isaac Acknowledges Important Forestry Achievements for Communities on Northern Vancouver Island – FESBC – Forest Enhancement Society of BC

“Paper Excellence is proud to be a part of the Atli Chip Limited Partnership. As a company, we understand the importance of being good neighbors and greatly value our relationships with Indigenous communities and their business ventures. FESBC funding has been critical in helping source fibre for the chip plant and keep it operating at a time when the industry is struggling and sawmills are shut down or curtailed due to low harvesting activity. This slowdown of harvesting activity has greatly impacted the flow of pulplogs to the Atli Chip plant and threatened its viability. FESBC funding has helped keep fibre flowing, ensuring continued employment at the plant and production of chips for Paper Excellences coastal facilities. ” – Quinton Hayward, Chief Forester for Paper Excellence and an Atli Chip Board Member.

Port McNeill, Alert Bay and Surrounding Communities, B.C. – Atli Resources LP, a ‘Namgis First Nation-owned company, in collaboration with the Forest Enhancement Society of BC (FESBC), is celebrating an important milestone in sustainable forestry practices with the successful recovery of 35,000 cubic meters of fibre—equivalent to approximately 700 truck loads. This achievement has been made possible through the crucial support and funding provided by FESBC, highlighting the impactful role FESBC plays in supporting projects that lead to substantial environmental benefits and community development.

As a part of the projects funded by FESBC, waste fibre is being collected and chipped at the Atli Chip facility at Beaver Cove. The fibre comes from areas outside the economic radius of the plant, including areas near Holberg, Port Alice, Woss, and Port McNeill. The chipped fibre is then transported to support the operations of Paper Excellence’s pulp mills in Howe Sound and Crofton.

Chief Victor Isaac of the ‘Namgis First Nation reflected on the projects’ profound cultural and environmental impact and said, “For generations, our connection to the forest has been fundamental, from the cedar bark used in our traditions and day-to-day life to the trees that support our existence. These forests are not just resources—they are vital to our cultural identity and way of life. FESBC’s funding has been crucial in maintaining this. It’s allowed us to integrate sustainable management practices that respect our heritage while ensuring the forests remain vibrant and productive for future generations. This project doesn’t just benefit us economically through job creation—it helps maintain the health of our lands, which is priceless.”

Row 1 (L to R): Loaded barge heading out from Atli Resources LP; Roadside pile burning undertaken by the crew, Row 2 (L to R): Transporting logs; Atli Resources LP chip plant. Photos credit: Atli Resources LP.

The two projects on North Vancouver Island, supported through FESBC funding, are confronting the logistical and operational challenges in salvaging and transporting fibre, particularly from remote or hard-to-reach areas and are successfully managing to transport the waste fibre instead of piling and burning it.

“Forests are at the heart of our identity in B.C., and we are all responsible for ensuring their future,” said Bruce Ralston, Minister of Forests. “As we work to support a strong and sustainable forest sector, FESBC has played a pivotal role in helping get more fibre that would have previously gone to waste into the hands of mills across B.C. to be processed into usable products. These initiatives help get more value out of every tree and lower greenhouse gas emissions, all while supporting the hard-working people and businesses that make up our forestry sector.”

Confirming Minister Ralston’s remarks, the project is already showcasing the tangible outcomes of such initiatives. This project effectively recovered 35,000 cubic meters of waste fibre (equivalent to 15,493 CO2 emissions if burned, further equivalent to 3,300 cars off the road for a year), including low-value logs and short pieces of wood typically left to pile and burn or rot. This reduces potential wildfire fuel and significantly cuts down on greenhouse gas emissions, plus smoke and ash.

Doug Mosher, CEO of Atli Resources, said, “The involvement, advice, assistance, and funding from FESBC has made an incredible contribution to the fibre supply for the chip plant. With FESBC funding, Atli Resources and its contractor have been able to salvage fibre that otherwise would be well beyond the chip plant’s economic range to transport it economically. This also has enhanced primary and secondary employment and other benefits to the environment and local economy.”

The benefits, as Mosher notes, extend beyond the immediate environmental impact. The operation of the chip plant and related salvaging activities has created 25 to 30 full-time ongoing jobs, providing stable employment and boosting the local economy. The influx of workers has led to increased demand for local services such as housing, food, and retail and has prompted contractors to invest in new equipment to handle the increased workload. Moreover, the project has helped more efficient forest regeneration by clearing the way for new seedlings, thus enhancing the sustainability of forest management practices.

Kurt Leroy, operations manager with Estero Peak Contracting Ltd., explained, “The help and the funding from the FESBC program has made it financially viable for Estero Peak Contracting Ltd. to salvage and haul logs from outside the usual Fibre Recovery Zone (distance wise). They have, therefore, been able to provide more jobs for members of the local communities at the north end of Vancouver Island.”

Beyond the multiple benefits this project has provided the ‘Namgis and the community, it has brought together several local companies, creating strong partnerships that boost both the economy and the environment. A critical contributor to the success of the project is Atli Chip LP. Atli Chip is jointly owned by Atli Resources, along with the local logging company Wahkash Contracting Ltd, and Paper Excellence, a pulp and paper company. Estero Peak Contracting Ltd, a local contractor, takes care of fibre salvaging, loading, and hauling the waste wood, and supporters like Western Forest Products and Mosaic Forest Management provide access to cutblocks for salvaging fibre. Paper Excellence purchases the pulp logs for the chip plant from forest licensees and various landowners and then purchases the residual chips and hog fuel (bark and small pieces of wood) from Atli Chip LP. This teamwork shows how working together can lead to major achievements in sustainable forestry.

Chris McGourlick, operations manager with FESBC, said, “Atli Chip LP is an excellent example of a First Nations-led partnership achieving multiple environmental, social and economic benefits. Removingresidual fibre and the corresponding reduction in burning activities contributes to a healthier local environment and additional economic activities. As we see harvest levels decrease across the province, partnerships like this are critical to providing stability to communities and local economies. The leadership that the Namgis are showing through Atli Resources and Atli Chip is highlighting ways to move forward as forest stewardship evolves in the province. FESBC is proud to partner with them as they work to improve the utilization of our forest resources.”

Looking ahead, Atli Resources remains committed to expanding its environmental and economic impacts through sustainable forestry practices. The company continuously seeks available fibre for chipping and plans to increase the operational capacity of the chip plant to double shifts whenever sufficient fibre is available. This will maximize productivity and the project’s environmental benefits.

According to Mosher, the waste wood salvaging projects are also set to continue, especially for the long-distance areas outside of the Ministry of Forests-derived Fibre Recovery Zones, relying on the ongoing support from FESBC funding. This sustained effort will ensure that less fibre goes to waste, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and better protect communities from wildfire risk.

These comprehensive efforts further showcase the critical role of FESBC-funded projects in preserving the environment and strengthening the economic fabric of communities throughout B.C.

This decision affects approximately 75 employees. “We recognize the difficulty this decision has placed on both our employees and the Cowichan Valley community,” said Blair Dickerson, Vice President, Public Affairs. “We will work to minimize negative impacts wherever possible.”

The mill’s pulp operations, which supports approximately 400 employees, will continue production during the indefinite paper curtailment. Going forward, the Crofton team will focus on making the remaining pulp operations cost competitive and aligned with our overall business strategies and direction.

Paper Excellence Canada will continue to supply our customers with products typically made at Crofton from other mills within the Paper Excellence Group where possible. The company remains fully committed to growing the specialty business.

Paper Excellence Canada thanks both federal and provincial governments for their efforts to support Catalyst Crofton’s paper operations. Exploring the World of Pulp and Paper: An Interview with Matthew Scott, EIT

At Paper Excellence, we take pride in nurturing the next generation of industry leaders who bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to our operations. This year, the Port Alberni Mill brought Engineer-In-Training Matthew Scott onto the team, a recent graduate from the University of Calgary with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.

Matthew’s journey into the pulp and paper industry was driven by a profound fascination with the chemical and mechanical processes that underpin the creation of paper products. The transformation of raw materials to the final paper product led him to pursue a career in an industry that marries science with innovation. “In the mill, we have a wide range of equipment that I interact with. I’m looking forward to gaining deeper knowledge on our huge variety of industrial equipment,” said Matthew.

Upon entering the industry, Matthew was pleasantly surprised by the culture of continuous innovation that drives the Port Alberni Mill. “It’s impressive that the team is always pushing the envelope to develop new products within the confines of our existing equipment & feedstocks,” said Matthew.

This dedication to innovation aligns perfectly with Paper Excellence’s commitment to staying at the forefront of industry advancements, ensuring that we deliver the best possible products to our customers.

Matthew is currently working on a project involving the performance monitoring of our paper machine’s centrifugal cleaner system. Collaborating closely with the operations team, he aims to identify any deficiencies within the system and implement necessary adjustments to enhance the extraction of contaminants from the paper machine feedstock. This project holds the potential to not only improve the overall efficiency of our operations but also significantly reduce paper losses – a testament to our dedication to sustainability and resource optimization.

It’s been Matthew’s lifelong dream to live on Vancouver Island, and he feels lucky to reside in Port Alberni. Port Alberni’s proximity to the ocean and mountains enables him to pursue passions such as hiking, swimming, fishing, and even surfing.

Matthew’s journey into the pulp and paper industry showcases the excitement and innovation that drives our operations at Paper Excellence. Matthew’s enthusiasm for processes and commitment to efficiency align seamlessly with our values. His impactful projects and dedication to both his work and his chosen home on Vancouver Island make him a remarkable addition to the Paper Excellence family.

Stay tuned for more stories of excellence as we continue to spotlight the individuals who drive our industry forward. At Paper Excellence, we’re not just crafting paper; we’re cultivating talent and shaping a sustainable future.

Paper Excellence Canada donates $175,000 to support communities in Shelburne and Barrington affected by the wildfires

Tina Comeau recently wrote this article in SALTWIRE about the communities Shelburne and Barrington rebuilding after the 2023 wildfires: “Support continues for those impacted by the wildfires in Shelburne County“.

Excerpt from the news article:

FUNDING, LUMBER SUPPORT
But there continues to be help extended to those living through the impacts of the wildfire.

On Oct. 11, pulp manufacturer Paper Excellence Canada announced a $175,000 contribution to support the ongoing recovery efforts for individuals, families, and communities in Shelburne and Barrington affected by the wildfires.

Of that, $115,000 will directly support families who are rebuilding damaged and destroyed homes, and $60,000 will support the We Rise Again Fund – Shelburne County.

Paper Excellence is grateful for its contribution partners, Freeman Lumber and Scotsburn Lumber, who are providing more than $66,000 in in-kind lumber donations to support rebuilding efforts. Wilson’s Home Hardware in Barrington is also helping to provide families with building supplies.

Jean-Francois Guillot, Chief Operating Officer of Paper Excellence Canada, stands amongst some of the donated lumber that will help people recovering from the wildfires in Shelburne County. The company announced a $175,000 contribution on Oct. 11 to support the recovering and rebuilding efforts.

“The wildfires of June 2023 were incredibly devastating for many Nova Scotians and left numerous families with damaged and destroyed homes,” says Jean-Francois Guillot, Chief Operating Officer of Paper Excellence Canada. “We are hopeful that our contribution and the support of our partners will offer reprieve to those families most impacted.”

Guillot tells Saltwire people helping people is so important.

“Companies are made of people,” he says. “It’s easy for companies to say I’ll donate money to the Red Cross. Then your job is done.”

In fact, Paper Excellence did donate $25,000 to the Canadian Red Cross fires appeal earlier this year.

“We felt that we can do more than that, and with the help of the community,” Guillot says. “If you work together … you can take a bad situation and make it, not a perfect one, but at least move on with a solution.”

Celebrating Customer Service Week at Paper Excellence!

Our customer service teams celebrated Customer Service Week together the first week in October and it was a great success!

Greater Vancouver Foodbank Fundraiser

The teams took part in two customer presentations—one from a procurement manager and one from a purchasing manager. Both presenters shared their thoughts on the importance of customer service, how we stand out as a vendor, and what added value we provide. They also discussed the future of printing and writing for the markets they serve.

The teams also met with Stew Gibson, COO, who provided his thoughts on the importance of customer service, the future of paper excellence, how we stand out as a preferred supplier, and what he is most proud of regarding Paper Excellence.

This year’s theme was Making a Difference and over the course of the week a peer-to-peer nomination program allowed people to nominate their fellow teammates in one of three categories: You Make a Difference; Everyday Hero; and Improving Practices Champion. There were also team building activities, opportunities to celebrate and socialize, and a fundraiser to give back to the community. The team raised $2,182 for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank!

“This was our first year celebrating customer service week,” says Lyn Stone, Vice President, Customer Solutions. “We expanded our scope to reach all the people on our team that play integral roles in providing service to our customers. It was a great team experience, given the last few years of quiet separation due to COVID. Hearing people laughing in the office was a wonderful reminder that we are an amazing team, made up of fabulous individuals!”

Seeing Forest Management in Action

As part of the Canadian Woodlands Forum, the recent Nova Scotia meeting included a significant amount of time spent visiting sites utilizing innovative and ecological practises.

Katrina Leighton from Truro and Lech Krzywonos, Principal of the Truro campus of the Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) (approx. 800 students) joined the Woodlands fall field tour on October 4 to learn more about today’s ecological forest practises and forest management in action.

NSCC’s Truro Campus has a longstanding relationship with Northern Pulp in a land lease arrangement for a forestry outreach facility called Gittens Lodge. This partnership dates back to the early 1970s when Ted Gittens, a professor at NSCC at the time, had a vision for a forestry woodlot based on leading environmental practises. Professor Gittens was ahead of his time and today the facility is visited by over 1,000 people each year.

Private Woodlots Managing Storm Damage

As part of the field trip portion of the Canadian Woodlands Forum last week, Paper Excellence visited a private woodlot owned by Stephen Thompson.

As owner of one of over 30,000 private woodlots in Nova Scotia, Stephen had tough decisions to make following the extensive amount of trees downed post hurricane Fiona. With thousands of trees damaged it would have made sense and been cheaper to extensively cut impacted forests, even clearcutting in some instances.

However in Renfrew, Hants County, Nova Scotia, owners decided on a more laborious and complex approach following the storm, protecting the esthetics of the forest, longtime camps and biological diversity. They cut carefully and strategically, increasing optionality for the future.

This way everyone who enjoys a walk in the woods wins! It was a beautiful day to be in the forest.

Indigenous Cultural Awareness Talk for Leaders

This week, the leadership of Paper Excellence Canada and our sister companies – Domtar and Resolute Forest Products – came together for an Indigenous cultural awareness talk in advance of the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.

Our thanks to Chief Ian Campbell of the Squamish First Nation and Rob Everson, Hereditary Chief of the Gigal’ga̱m ‘Walas Kwagu’ł, for their frank and thoughtful presentations on both the history and effects of colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and their own personal perspectives on Truth and Reconciliation.

Both men suggested a variety of resources for people who wanted to learn more:

Members of Parliament tour Resolute paper mill in Gatineau, Quebec

Jean-Francois Guillot, Chief Operating Officer, co-hosted a tour of the Resolute paper mill alongside local Member of Parliament Steven MacKinnon in Gatineau on September 20 as part of National Forestry Week.

Joined by fellow Members of Parliament Sylvie Berube, Gary Vidal and Marcus Powlowski, Mr. MacKinnon was proud to show off the historic mill, which helped found the city of Gatineau when it first opened in 1926.

Newsprint produced at the Gatineau paper mill is made from biomass sourcing 100% of its electricity from renewable hydroelectricity. The mill is a sustainability success story and has reduced its indirect emissions by 90% since 2015. Forests managed in the Outaouais are certified to sustainable forestry standards such as FSC and SFI (maybe spell out?)

If you indulge in reading the Sunday New York Times for example, you might be interested to know the newsprint for the paper edition comes from this mill. The paper is printed digitally in Canada and the mill produces 1 kilometer of newsprint every minute.

Thank you to Mr. MacKinnon and his fellow parliamentarians joining us for the tour!

While this is a positive development, we will continue to assess the ongoing viability of maintaining Kraft pulp operations at Crofton to ensure it is cost effective to operate and consistent with our overall business strategies,” said Krista Cuddy, Catalyst Crofton, Interim Director – Operations & Integration.

Paper Excellence Canada continues to work with both the Public and Private Workers of Canada (PPWC) and Unifor unions to support our valued workforce as we restart pulp production and mitigate the impact of the ongoing paper production curtailment.
