Breaking into a career after college is increasingly competitive, and internships can make the difference. In the latest issue of Paper Matters magazine, Domtar highlighted perspectives from a few recent interns. As a continuation of that story, we’re sharing additional interviews that showcase even more experiences across our internship and co-op programs.
What was the most rewarding hands-on experience or project you worked on during your internship at Domtar, and what did you take away from it?
The diversity of projects and challenges I was exposed to allowed me to develop a comprehensive understanding of the processes and the plant’s operations. I worked on a wide variety of mandates and continuous improvement activities. This variety gave me exposure to several aspects of process engineering, strengthened my ability to adapt to different issues, and helped me structure my work efficiently while collaborating with multiple departments.
What surprised you the most about your work at Domtar or about the paper and packaging industry?
It was the scale and complexity of the processes, particularly the large number of interconnected variables affecting plant performance. I was also struck by the constant drive to challenge existing practices and improve processes, including those that have been in place for many years. Finally, I was pleasantly surprised by the openness and availability of the employees. Everyone takes the time to explain, answer questions, and share their knowledge.
What surprised you most about working at Domtar or about the paper and packaging industry?
The most surprising thing to me about the paper and packaging industry is how dedicated and passionate its employees are. Everyone here loves to talk about their job and answer any questions you might have about the paper machine. It’s a super small and close-knit industry too, so everyone knows everyone!
How has your Domtar internship influenced your career goals or future plans?
Working at Domtar has exposed me to many young engineers who are fantastic role models for what the future could hold. Being surrounded by young and experienced mentors alike has been inspiring to see as a young paper student. I’ve loved my time here at Domtar’s Hawesville paper mill, and I could see myself ending up in a paper mill in the future.
How did working with Domtar teams (engineers, operators, managers, etc.) shape your understanding of the pulp and paper or forest products industry?
It made me realize just how complex and demanding the pulp and paper industry is and how fascinating it can be. Behind a single sheet of paper lies a rigorous process in which every step, from wood to packaged paper, requires precision and expertise. Daily interaction with the teams helped me better understand operational realities and the importance of decisions made on the production floor.

How did your internship at Domtar influence your career goals or future plans?
My internships at Domtar introduced me to the richness of the manufacturing environment and the strong pursuit of excellence that drives it. I was particularly struck by the teams’ commitment to continuous improvement, even within a well-established facility. This experience confirmed my desire to invest myself in this field over the long term. It led me to complete a second internship and eventually relocate to the Eastern Townships to pursue my career after graduation. Today, I am grateful to be part of a stimulating and people-centered environment like the Domtar Windsor mill.
