This piece was created for the KU Admissions office, who was looking for “something different” from previous years. Their goal was to create a piece that would generate excitement and help KU stand out from their competitors, all while staying within a limited budget.
Students are commonly opening admit packets with stylistic expectations and often build a social presence around their “unveiling” – even judging schools based on their package. If KU isn’t able to make a notable impression, they could miss out on peer-to-peer endorsements for their school.
After doing quite a bit of research, they landed on the idea of a compelling experience of a folder that gradually unveils a story as it’s opened, revealing multiple components for the student along the way. Along with swag that included a flag and stickers, it contains a checklist of items students need to complete before starting classes at KU, plus their welcome letter/scholarship offer signed by Nick Stevens.
Admittance packets are a crucial building block in the relationship between university and student. It’s the congratulatory message from admissions to the student, the celebration of all their hard work. The accepted student has earned a “mailbox moment” and KU ensured that their delivery matched the recipient’s excitement.
