Construite dans les ann\u00e9es 1970 pour accueillir un port charbonnier qui n’a jamais vu le jour, la fl\u00e8che de Squamish est depuis longtemps un obstacle pour les jeunes saumons. La fl\u00e8che emp\u00eache les jeunes saumons d’acc\u00e9der \u00e0 l’estuaire du d\u00e9troit de Howe, qui leur offre la possibilit\u00e9 de grandir et de se renforcer avant de s’aventurer en mer. <\/p>\n\n

Fruit de plus de 20 ans de travail et d’un partenariat entre la Squamish River Watershed Society, P\u00eaches et Oc\u00e9ans Canada (MPO), la nation Squamish et la communaut\u00e9 environnementale locale, la berme est en train d’\u00eatre enlev\u00e9e dans le but de restaurer l’habitat du saumon quinnat dans les conditions qui pr\u00e9valaient avant l’apparition de la fl\u00e8che. Le projet d’enl\u00e8vement de la fl\u00e8che de Squamish est financ\u00e9 par le Programme communautaire pour le saumon (PCS) de la FSP. <\/p>\n\n

\u00ab\u00a0La suppression de la partie inf\u00e9rieure de la fl\u00e8che de Squamish ouvrira l’estuaire aux jeunes saumons quinnats en migration qui pourront p\u00e9n\u00e9trer dans les eaux riches de l’estuaire pour devenir des saumoneaux avant d’entrer dans le d\u00e9troit de Howe\u00a0\u00bb, explique Edith Tobe, chef de projet pour la Squamish River Watershed Society. \u00ab\u00a0Le projet devrait permettre d’am\u00e9liorer le taux de survie des jeunes saumons quinnat de 10 000 \u00e0 100 000 par an. <\/p>\n\n

Parall\u00e8lement, \u00e0 Port Alberni, le projet Riparian Restoration in Huu-ay-aht Territory b\u00e9n\u00e9ficie \u00e9galement d’un financement du PSC. L’\u00e9quipe des Premi\u00e8res nations Huu-ay-aht plante des c\u00e8dres rouges de l’Ouest et des \u00e9pinettes de Sitka dans des zones s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9es des ruisseaux South Sarita, Pachena et Sabrina. Les racines des arbres stabiliseront les berges et fourniront des d\u00e9bris ligneux qui serviront \u00e0 am\u00e9liorer l’habitat des poissons. <\/p>\n\n

Financ\u00e9 principalement par la vente du timbre f\u00e9d\u00e9ral de conservation du saumon achet\u00e9 chaque ann\u00e9e par les p\u00eacheurs en eau sal\u00e9e, le programme communautaire de conservation du saumon de la FSP accorde des subventions pour des projets de conservation du saumon. Le produit de la vente du timbre, qui s’\u00e9l\u00e8ve \u00e0 6,24 dollars, est revers\u00e9 \u00e0 la Colombie-Britannique par l’interm\u00e9diaire du PSF, ce qui g\u00e9n\u00e8re pr\u00e8s de 1,5 million de dollars par an pour les subventions communautaires. Jusqu’en 2023, la province de la Colombie-Britannique s’est \u00e9galement engag\u00e9e \u00e0 verser des fonds au PSC dans le cadre d’une subvention de 5 millions de dollars. La p\u00e9riode actuelle de demande de subvention du PSF est ouverte jusqu’au 15 octobre 2022. <\/p>\n\n
