In November 2003, in a joint announcement with World Wildlife Fund Canada (WWF-Canada), we pledged to certify our forests and mills to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards, subject to the completion of two forest pilot projects. We were the first Canadian-based fine papers and forest products company to make such a broad commitment.
The first of the pilots was successfully completed at the Pineland Forest near Timmins, Ontario in August 2005. The second, which took place at a public forestland near Val-d’Or, Quebec, where Domtar sources some of its fiber, was awarded certification in December 2005.
At the end of December 2005, audits had been completed on over 25% of Domtar direct licensed forestlands. In 2006, we continue to move forward in our efforts to achieve full certification by year-end. However, we are experiencing some delays related to two of our locations.
Meanwhile, all of our merchant operations are certified under the FSC Chain-of-Custody, attesting to the fact that the Domtar papers they sell have been produced using fibre from well-managed forests that has been tracked “from the forest floor to the customer’s door”.
