Frequently asked questions
- 45 - Q : Other than the large mammals, did other species survive without too much damage ?
- A : Yes. Carnivores (foxes, coyotes, weasels, fishers, etc.), like airborne predators, can endure fairly long periods without food. It is difficult, however, to say whether access to their food (small mammals) was compromised.
Semi-aquatic mammals (beavers, otters, minks, muskrats) were probably not affected much, as their shelter and access to food was not compromised. The snowshoe hare and eastern cottontail rabbit, like the deer, most likely were able to take shelter and find plenty of food after the ice storm.
Semi-hibernating species like raccoons, skunks, groundhogs and black bears were definitely not affected except for some individuals whose hibernation den may have been damaged.
Tree-dwelling mammals that live in holes in trees, including northern and southern flying squirrels, may have been affected.
