Frequently asked questions
- 34 - Q : What should I do for my maple trees in the coming weeks?
- A : After an ice storm, visually inspect the damage to the maple trees and care for the saplings (young trees less than 9 cm in diameter). Maple syrup producers should then decide whether to collect sap in the spring of 1998. If they decide to continue operations this spring, it is because they expect the sugar bush to be operational in the spring of 1999 as well, considering the cost of reconstructing the sap collection system. Producers with a maple grove management plan have usually identified the saplings on their woodlots. Where possible, find these and straighten them up if they are bent farther than 45 degrees from the vertical. To hold them in position, attach them to stakes made of materials available on site, or tie them with guy lines to pickets or neighbouring trees. Pruning will often be required to facilitate healing or occlusion.
