Frequently asked questions

33 - Q : Should I consider clearcutting my maple grove that was damaged in the ice storm?
A : No. Not all of the severely damaged maples will die. An ice-damaged tree draws on the resources of its root system to rebuild its crown. It may remain moribund for four years or more if it manages to form a functioning crown before it uses up its reserves. Contrary to all expectations, it may even survive. Since it is impossible to make a final judgment on the chances of survival of a seriously damaged maple tree, it is better to wait until the fall of 1998 to start cutting the woodlot.
