Frequently asked questions
- 24 - Q : Will the ice-related breakage lead to insect infestations and disease?
- A : Not necessarily. Ice damage makes trees more susceptible to insects and disease, especially if the trees were not particularly vigorous before the ice storm. All wounds (broken branches, split trunks, cracked or torn bark) are potential entry points for insects and disease. Pests will not necessarily kill the trees. A tree's ability to react to an attack depends on a number of things: the type and severity of the damage caused by the ice storm, type and severity of the pest attacks, initial health of the tree, treatment of the damage (more noticeable in an urban environment). Trees should be monitored during the next growing season for any signs of insect infestations or disease (wilting leaves, sap mixed with sawdust, holes and tunnels under the bark, etc.).
