Frequently asked questions
- 20 - Q : My poplars were hit hard by the ice. How can I assess the damage?
- A : Poplars are very vulnerable to ice. Most of the branches may be torn from the trunk or the stem may break. In young stands (4 metres high or less), most of the damaged trees can be repaired with appropriate pruning (shaping, shearing). In older stands, if the trunk is not too badly damaged, and even if a large number of branches have been lost, fast regrowth during subsequent seasons will recreate a sufficient crown. If the stand justifies it, crowns can be pruned or shaped to a height of about 7 metres. Too many wounds may cause deteriorating health and reduce the stand's yield of wood. When the trunk is broken below the branches, the tree is a total loss and should be harvested in 6 to 12 months if the volume warrants such action.
