19 - Q : I have small trees whose tops are broken. What should I do in the short term?

A : Broken leaders should not change the initial vocation (lumber) of a stand. Tending will be required for several years, but no major short-term work needs to be done.

For young ornamental trees, wait until the ice has melted, then:

• cut off the broken branches close to a healthy adjoining branch,
• trim around the wounds and,
• retrain another leader if the original one was severely damaged.
