Frequently asked questions
- 13 - Q : I have to cut several damaged branches off my tree. How can I do this without impairing the future growth of the tree?
- A : The branch stub should be cut so that the callus will close the wound as this is a point of entry for insects and disease. The cut should be done where the stub joins another branch or the tree trunk, at an angle of about 30°, about the same angle at which the branch joins the main stem. Do not cut flush to the trunk or main stem because this removes the collar of active, phenol-producing tissue that resists the invasion of pathogens. A clean, neat, smooth and slightly oblique cut will enable the callus to gradually cover the entire wound.
