Frequently asked questions

12 - Q : The tree top is broken. Does the tree have to be cut down?
A : The tree's crown contains most of the nitrogen and hormones that regulate the activity of the cambium. When it loses part of its crown, the tree also loses substances it needs to heal its wounds and grow. During the first growing season, both physiological processes are drastically altered. On the other hand, the tree's roots are still intact and active.

In deciduous trees, other branches tend to take the place of a leading shoot and this can weaken the structure of the tree. The damaged leader should therefore be cut off as close as possible to the most vertical, longest and best-located branch. In time, this branch will replace the leader and give the tree a pyramid shape.

For conifers, new shoots sprout from the tips of the branches. There is no other choice than to completely cut off the broken branch. A secondary branch must then be trained into a vertical position to take the place of the damaged leader. In a few years' time, the change will not show.
